Malakoff Elementary Presents Their Robotics Team

(Laredo, Texas)-Dr. M.E. Malakoff Elementary School’s Armored Knights Robotics team, displayed their hard work at this years Gifted and Talented Showcase which was recently held at the United I.S.D. Student Activity Center.
The team incorporated the use of S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering and math) with the young minds to step up to this year’s first Lego League “2014 World Class Learning Unleashed” challenge. United Independent School District’s Community Role Models for May 2015

(Laredo, Texas) – On May 28, 2015 , the Webb County Sheriff’s Office and the Elysian Social Club honored Community Role Models from Laredo’s public and private high schools with an awards ceremony and lunch at Salon Chapa.
Four UISD students were among the honorees who received the monthly recognition, which is based on extra-curricular activities and volunteer work above and beyond the classroom setting. Additional sponsors of the Community Role Model Awards include KGNS-TV, ABC network affiliate NGNS (ABC), and Telemundo Laredo. All  honorees received a $500.00 scholarship, courtesy of the Elysian Social Club.

Three More United High School Students Sign Scholarships

(Laredo, Texas)-On May 27, 2015 United High School (UHS),hosted a triple scholarship press conference for three graduating seniors who signed letters of intent to play college level sports. Dulce Garcia, Rodrigo Zuniga,and Eileen Gallegos,accompanied by their parents, signed their full ride scholarships in front of an audience that included fellow students, athletes UHS coaches and campus staff.

UISD Police Department Hosts 1st Annual K9 Competition

The United ISD Police Department hosted the inaugural “K-9” Team Competition on May 20th​at the Laredo Coliseum.  A total of 32 local and out of town law enforcement canine (K-9) teams were competing to be “top dog” in the areas of accurate, timed searches for narcotics.  

Each K-9 team searched an area that contained between 50 to 75 articles for three minutes.
Some articles contain two types of drugs, marijuana and cocaine. The handlers would call an alert if the canine indicated drugs present in a particular article.
Teams were judged based on a points-scoring system:  Marijuana was worth 50 points and cocaine was worth 100 points. 
The canine handlers had to strive to accumulate points as they tried to beat the clock. If an alert was called …

The UISD Police department requests the assistance of all parents as this school year comes to a close to practice all preventative measures.  Parents can help ease their own concerns by being extra vigilant about what your children bring to school on their person, in backpacks and/or in their vehicles. Chamber of Commerce’s School Bell Award Honorees

(Laredo, Texas)-The Laredo Chamber of Commerce-Education Committee honored some of Laredo’s exceptional educators at their Annual School Bell Award Banquet held on May 19 at Texas A&M International University. 
This years recipient’s from the United Independent School District were: Maria Elena Dominguez, Killam Elementary; Carlos U. Ramirez, United Middle, and Ana Cristina Martinez, Lyndon B. Johnson High. Kennedy-Zapata Elementary Announces Honor Society Inductees for 2015

    On May 20, 2015, Kennedy-Zapata Elementary School held a special ceremony to welcome 43 students (in grades 3-5), into the National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS). Webb County Judge Tano Tijerina led the students through an induction pledge as proud parents and school staff looked on. The National Elementary Honor Society is one of the most prestigious honors that can be awarded to an elementary student.

Two United South Students Take National and Top Titles at Powerlifting Meet

(Laredo, Texas)-United South High School senior Rudy Flores competed at the USA Power Lifting Mens Nationals meet on Sunday in San Antonio.  He was crowned “National Champion” in his division with lifts of 821 lbs squat, 584 lbs bench press and 683 lbs deadlift for a winning total of 2,088 lbs. 
He has already been extended an invitation to represent the USA in Prague, Czech Republic at the World Powerlifting Championships in August.

United ISD Names Ramirez, Alvarado To New Administrative Posts

(Laredo, Texas)-The United ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Roberto J. Santos recently promoted two individuals to administrative positions in the District. Cynthia M. Ramirez will be the Executive Director of the Special Education Department and Raquel E. Alvarado will be the new Principal of Prada Elementary School. Washington middle School Hits a High Note with Singing Contest!

(Laredo, Texas)-The 1st Annual George Washington Middle School (GWMS), Voice singing competition showcased the musical talents of 13 students. It was 6th grade student Kalina Lozano who won the coveted 1st place trophy along with a recording session at Guerra Communications. 
Second place winner Karla Vasquez and third place winner Zustin Gonzalez also turned in stellar performances. All participating student performers and audience members had satisfied the requirements of a school-wide reading challenge .
