Accelerated Reader Program for 2014-2015 Launched at DeLlano Elementary

(Laredo, Tx)-Each year, DeLlano elementary school holds an Accelerated Reader (A.R.), student rally to energize students for the new school year.
The celebration was held on September 22, 2014, and was highlighted by a performance featuring the De Llano Dolphin dancers. Special guests included UISD Lead Librarian Carmen Escamilla, the Alexander and United high school mascots, and H.E. Buddy. The A.R. program is designed to help students develop a love of reading and reach their A.R. goals.

Free Lunch for Members of Law Enforcement

(Laredo, Tx)-Several members of the City’s law enforcement community joined students at Alexander High School  for lunch.  This is because the District will now offer free lunch to law enforcement officials who want to eat at UISD campuses.  The individual needs to be in full uniform and present credentials to front office staff and administrators where checks can be conducted.

Showing Support for United Way!

(Laredo, Tx)-United Way of Laredo held their kick-off luncheon where UISD administrators heard from special guest speaker Dana LaMon.  Although he has been blind since the age of four, LaMon excelled in grade school and obtained his undergraduate degree from Yale University and law degree from the University of Southern California.  At the event, he spoke about the importance of providing excellent work each day which he outlined from his book entitled, “The Excellence Book: 104 Principles for Living and Working.”

Finley Students and Staff Celebrate Local Heroes

(Laredo, Tx)-On September 11, 2014, Finley Elementary school combined their PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System)/Leadership rally with a Patriots Day salute to the heroes of 9-11. Principal Joe Garza led students, teachers and staff in a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and Texas Pledge before reviewing the rules of conduct for students at Finley elementary school.

United South Legend Comes Home to Encourage Students

(Laredo, Tx)-What a treat it was for students at United South High School when UISD League of Legends luminary A.J. Mayers (inducted in 2014) returned to his alma mater to give a series of lectures about his life in the entertainment industry and his most recent novel entitled Black Sheep’s Meadow.
Mayers graduated from United South in 2005 and attended the University of Texas in Austin,Texas where he pursued his childhood dream of succeeding in the world of media and entertainment.

Finley Elementary Songbird Hits a High Note!

Mariely Guadiana, a 5th grade student at Finley Elementary School, traveled to Miami, Florida during the week of August 25th, 2014 to compete in a singing competition hosted by television personality Don Francisco on Univision’s weekly Sabado Gigante program. Ms. Guadiana competed against two other performers and won the top prize of $1,000.00 for her rendition of “Cucuru Cucu Paloma”.
