Derek Esparza Signs with Cisco College

(Laredo, Tx)-Derek Esparza, a senior at United High School (U.H.S.), recently signed a Letter of Intent to play football at Cisco College in Cisco, Texas. Derek has played football at United High School for the past four years, during which he has earned multiple accolades including Quarterback All-District First Team and All-City M.V.P.   In addition, Derek was named  Dave Campbell’s Texas Player of The Week U.H.S. football Coach David Sanchez described Derek as an ambitious and bright young man who excels in athletics and academics.

Longhorns take honors at skilled workforce competition

(Laredo, Tx)- In March, students from the United High School Graphic Design program competed at SkillsUSA Texas competition in Corpus Christi. Six students were recognized for their talents and creativity in the Advertising Design field. Student Amy Gutierrez received State Superior. She also garnered State of Texas Best of Show for her Advertising Design. Students: Benjamin Escoto, Eddwin Cantu, and Rogelio Rodriguez also received State Superior recognition. Daniel Olivo received a State Excellence ribbon. Rogelio Rodriguez received State Excellence accolades for his photography panel.

Longhorns Take Top Awards At Nationals

(Laredo, Tx)-The United High School Model United Nations Club attended the national conference in New York and brought back several awards.  Of over 1,400 students who attended, Esteban Elizondo, Darren Garcia, Enrique Mejia, and Daniel Mendez were recognized as delegates and won the “Best Delegation Award.”   
Only 12 students at the conference received this recognition and UHS had 4 of these 12 students.  The Model United Nations Club (also known as Model UN or MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate students …

TAMIU Signs U.H.S. M.V.P. Cesar Guerrero

(Laredo, Tx)-United high school (U.H.S.) senior and soccer player Cesar Guerrero Jr. was beaming with Longhorn pride as he inscribed his name to a Letter of Intent from Texas A&M International University (TAMIU). The momentous occasion took place in the campus library, where Cesar was accompanied by his family, teammates, coaches and U.H.S. administrators. Cesar has played varsity soccer at U.H.S since his freshman year, and was recently named Most Valuable Player.

UISD Prom Project 2014

End of School Year is quickly approaching which means proms are near! 
(Laredo, Tx)-United ISD is hosting Prom Project 2014, dedicated to collecting formal dress attire, new or gently used, to help high school students prepare for prom.
 Individuals have an opportunity to donate new or gently used formal dresses and suits to our students who may not have the means to purchase formal wear in order to attend prom.  The donated gowns, suits and/or ties may be gently used or new, but in good condition.

Guest Speaker Romeo Rodriguez Visits United South High School

United South high school welcomed guest speaker Mr. Romeo Rodriguez on Tuesday, April 8.  Rodriguez spoke to students about self – esteem and how it acts as a driving force to personal choices.  Mr. Rodriguez drew on his personal experiences to illustrate how working in the service of others helped him raise his own self – esteem and as a result, experience an abundance of success in his professional life.

Shattered Dreams Preparation Underway

(Laredo, Tx)-Shattered Dreams Event To Take Place:  City of Laredo Police Officer Abraham H. Diaz, Jr. (left) addresses a group of first responders at the last planning meeting for the upcoming Shattered Dreams event.  Shattered Dreams is an educational experience that targets teens and reminds them about the dangers of drinking and driving.    This year’s event will be held at United High School on April 10 and 11.

United ISD welcomes Aron and says goodbye to Kelly of the UISD Police K-9 Team!

 (Laredo, Tx)-United ISD continues to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all students and staff.  To ensure that is so, we welcome Aron, an explosive detection K-9 who joined United ISD’s Police K-9 Unit on April 1st.  He is a male German short hair pointer, who will be working along side Officer Ben Bondoc.  He was donated by TSA (Transportation Security Administration), saving our UISD Police Department a total of $10, 000.00.

Congressman Cuellar nominates Alexander Senior Eduardo Salinas to Naval Academy…

(Laredo, Tx) Congressman Cuellar joined United Independent School District at Alexander High School to announce that Student Eduardo “Wayo” Salinas has been nominated by his office and has been accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. 
 
Congressman Cuellar provides service academy nominations, which is part of the military academies’ application process. STAAR Motivation Rallies Held at Gonzalez Middle School

Gonzalez Middle School hosted STAAR motivational rallies for their students on March 31, 2014. The events featured dance performances by the Gonzalez Middle School cheer and dance teams and a STAAR skit by the school faculty.
Campus Principal Patricia Perez was joined by UISD Trustee Ricardo “Rick” Rodriguez and City Councilman Charlie San Miguel to express their support for Gonzalez students who began taking their  STAAR tests on April 1.
