(Laredo, Texas)-United ISD has been selected as a 2021-2022 District of the Year finalist for the growth and achievements of its Emergent Bilingual students by the Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE). The work that Maria Arámbula-Ruiz, (Director of Bilingual/ESL/Dual and Foreign Languages), and her team of Bilingual coordinators have put into advancing emergent bilingual students has given the district a prestigious opportunity to be recognized as a top three finalist at this year’s TABE conference in Houston, Texas. Moreover, United ISD was selected as a finalist from thousands of other Texas campuses that are partnered with Summit K12.

“As the Director of the Bilingual program at United, I am thankful for the support of our Superintendent, Mr. David Gonzalez, our UISD Board, and the commitment from the Bilingual staff, school administration, and teachers. It is because of their work that this recognition has been bestowed upon our district. The coordination and partnership with Summit K12 has prepared our Bilingual students to successfully meet the state expectations on the Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System (TELAPS), despite the challenges that they have faced in recent years. They are the reason that the district is being considered for this honor at the TABE conference”, said Arambula-Ruiz.
