(Laredo, Texas)-Comic Book Day arrived early for LBJ 9th grade student artists by way of a tele-visit from elementary school teacher and comic book creator Hector Rodriguez. Mr. Rodriguez discussed the evolution of his comic book “El Peso Hero”, and described how the main character stands up for the rights of those who have been disenfranchised or treated unjustly on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border. Mr. Rodriguez also instructed the students on how to create storyboards and concluded his presentation with a Q&A session.
“The kind of champion depicted in El Peso Hero is not usually represented in popular comic book culture. This hero is one that our kids can identify with as they further develop their art skills. Moreover, comic books serve as effective tools for improving literacy skills because they help readers interpret text and synthesize information by blending the two within a story” said librarian Analine Johnson. National Comic Book Day is observed annually on September 25 by fans, collectors, readers, storytellers and artists.
