The first One City, One Book group discussion of the book, “Into the Beautiful North,” by Luis Alberto Urrea will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2010, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Laredo Public Library HEB Multi-Purpose Room, 1120 E. Calton Road.  The group discussion is an informal setting, allowing for all to participate freely. The book, a fictional work, takes a light-hearted approach to life’s obstacles, allowing the characters to believe they can solve their problems if they just keep trying. Emergency Reconstruction Closes Street

 Starting today, Tuesday, August 31, 2010, City of Laredo Public Works crews will close the 2800 block of Seymore between Kearney and Lion until Friday, September 3, 2010, due to an emergency repair and reconstruction of the valley gutter in the area.  Additionally, El Metro will not have access to the stop at Seymore and Lion.  
Traveling inbound, El Metro will use a temporary stop on Loring Street a block further from Seymour.

Broncos lose regular season finale; finish a franchise record 47-44

(August 30th, LAREDO, TX)-The Broncos (47-44) finished the 2010 regular season in the loss column falling to Coastal Bend Thunder (31-60) 11-7 in the regular season finale.  Laredo now turns its attention towards the 2010 ULB playoffs and specifically the Edinburg Road Runners. No matter what happens in the post season the 2010 season for the Laredo Broncos was truly a memorable one.

 EAGLE PASS, TEXAS – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry apprehended a San Antonio , Texas man wanted on an outstanding warrant for sexually violent predator. The apprehension occurred on Aug. 27, 2010 at Eagle Pass International Bridge (Bridge I). A CBP officer referred pedestrian Michael Anthony Torres, a 26-year-old male U.S. citizen from San Antonio , Texas for a secondary examination after a query of CBP national database systems at primary inspection revealed he was a possible match to …

Rubio Pleads Guilty to having threatened and unlawfully restrained girlfriend

The Domestic Violence Unit of the District Attorney’s Office reports that Rolando Rene Rubio entered a guilty plea today in the 406th District Court and was sentenced to three years in jail by the Honorable Judge Oscar J. Hale.
 Rubio has been incarcerated at the Webb County Jail ‘since his arrest and was brought into the courtroom in handcuffs.  He pled guilty to having threatened his girlfriend with imminent bodily injury by pointing a firearm at her while keeping her unlawfully restrained against her will.  The incident took place …

Webb County Sheriff’s Office Seizes 700 Pounds of Marijuana Over the Weekend

Laredo, Texas (Webb County) – On Friday, August 30, 2010, at approximately 8 p.m., The Webb County Sheriff’s Office Narcotic Unit assisted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, conducted an investigation on a mechanic shop at the 8100 block of San Gabriel.  Deputies developed information  and an investigation was conducted regarding suspicious activity at this location. Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) to Start Patrolling Texas-Mexico Border on Wednesday

Remotely-Piloted Aircraft to be Stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas
Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced that starting Wednesday, Customs and Border Protection (CBP) will begin operating an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) along the Texas-Mexico border in an effort to help deter illegal activity.
 
This UAS will be housed out of the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, TX, which Congressman Cuellar visited last week.

The Laredo Broncos announce the Players of the Week for Week 11 and 12.

Week 11 (August 8-14) – Jonathan Cisneros, 3B, batted .522 average, 2 HR, 9 Runs with a .593 On Base Percentage. The award is sponsored by Embassy Suites of Laredo.
Cisneros was signed by the Amarillo Dillas in the United League on 6/18/10 and then after playing in only eight games with the Dillas was traded to the Laredo Broncos for a player to be named on July 3rd. Cisneros graduated from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio where he played against current Bronco Jeff Jamnik. In 8 games …
