Courtesy Alex Meyer,

(Laredo, Texas)-The United Independent School District is proud to announce the Texas Science and Engineering Fair (TXSEF), advancement of two Gifted and Talented students who traveled to College Station, TX on March 25-27, 2022 for second round state-level competiton after winning in the district level science fair. Science Projects from Abigail Ramirez, a junior from John B. Alexander High school, and Grisseth A. Ortiz, a junior from United High School, created formidable competition for other statewide entries. Ramirez competed in the Environmental Engineering category with her project titled “Improving the Quality of Air with Spirogyra Algae” and Ortiz competed in the Behavioral and Social Sciences category with her project titled “Can Viewing Short Videos Alter Stress Levels?”.

The Second round advancement is a milestone – as this is the first time that UISD students compete at this level. Prior to the state competition, the pair began with research in a two-semester course called Scientific Research & Design I & II Their research work was comprised of reading scientific journals and designing a product to compete at the district science fair- where both won first place in their respective categories.

Teachers and administrators at John B. Alexander and United High School are very proud of Abigail and Grisseth, and recognize the ingenuity, creativity and effort they put forth to achieve their goals.
