Laredo, TX –Today, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) announced $2,000,000 in federal funding for Gateway Community Health Center that will go towards the construction of a new family medicine clinic on the west side of Laredo. The funds, derive from a federal earmark that Congressman Cuellar secured as part of the FY22 Appropriations Bill. The new family medicine clinic will help alleviate the financial and communal health barriers that prohibit this community from accessing and receiving proper healthcare services.

Congressman Cuellar also announced $167,000 for Gateway Community Health Center to fund a mobile clinic that will help close a critical gap in health care access in underserved and rural areas.

“Gateway Community Health Center has been a key ally of the federal government in our efforts to provide affordable, quality health care to the families of South Texas,” said Congressman Henry Cuellar. “I secured this community based earmark with the intention of providing health care to one of the most medically underserved areas in Laredo. People in the area will now have access to essential services closer to home, at the same affordable price, if not for free. For those people that still can’t make it to one of Gateway’s clinics, we secured money for this state-of-the-art mobile clinic that will allow us to provide health care to people in more rural, isolated areas.”

Congressman Cuellar continued, “Thank you, Gateway Community Health Center CEO, Elmo Lopez, and your entire staff for the everything you do for the people of South Texas.”

“On behalf of Gateway Community Health Center, we are grateful to Congressman Cuellar for his continued support for quality health care. With the funds we received, we will use this mobile medical unit to bring health care to Webb, Zapata, and Jim Hogg Counties, for people who have unreliable transportation. Our goal is to provide access to quality health care and Congressman Cuellar has helped us do just that,” said Gateway Community Health Center CEO, Elmo Lopez.

The mobile clinic will service Webb, Zapata and Jim Hogg counties, in addition to colonias along the border. It will also provide services to schools, churches, and community centers.

No patient will be turned away from receiving services regardless of their financial situation.
