Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo and Dr. Marte Martinez, Council Member for District 6, hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Tennis Courts at United Day School on Monday, November 22, 2021. This project was an agreement between United Day School and the City of Laredo with a purpose to provide the residents of District 6, and all tennis enthusiasts, accessibility to play this sport.
The City of Laredo invested over $210,000 to make the corresponding improvements to the 6-court facility. The amount covered the improvement of lighting, the addition of public restrooms, an office and storage space, and an upcoming concession stand, among other items.
“Partnerships with other members and other facilities in the community allow us to spread tax dollars in a more strategic way, respectful of what the citizens pay and the services that the City provides,” said Dr. Marte Martinez, “In district 6, we do not have the capacity to invest a lot of the available money because we do not have many block grants. So, we have to find creative ways to plan these types of projects that will benefit the community.”
The 6 tennis courts will be utilized by the United Day students as well as by the future official teams. Furthermore, the facility will be available for the community on a schedule that will not interfere with school hours and will have the capability to function as a host location for tournaments.
In an effort to promote health, safety, and the welfare of Laredo citizens, the Parks and Recreation Department continues to develop opportunities to enhance the physical and mental development of its residents.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by current and former members of the United Day School Board, including Treasurer, Mr. Raul Leal; Tina Treviño, President of the Laredo Tennis Association and the Stroke Survivors Group and volunteers; representatives of the United States Tennis Association, the South Texas Representative, Bobbie Cantu; the United Day Choir group; and members of City of Laredo management and department directors.
