J.B. Alexander High UIL Congress Team State Bound

(Laredo, Texas)-Recently, the Regional UIL Congress competition was held through a virtual tournament. Alexander High School senior Lorenzo Maldonado took the top award and advanced to the U.I.L. State competition, tentatively scheduled to be held in Austin, TX. Seniors Alexa Chapa and Carolina Santos-Paez placed 4th and 5th, respectively, and will go to state as alternates. U.I.L. Congress is a competitive speaking event that models the legislative process of democracy. The students debated real-world social and political policies for six hours of arduous competition. Topics included renewable energy sources and the deregulation of healthcare systems in the United States, among other bills, all written by the competitors.
The U.I.L. State Congress competition is held at the University of Texas. There, Maldonado will compete for the chance to make finals in the Super Congress to be held at the Texas State Capitol. They are coached by Cassandra Thompson and Jacob Thompson. Alexander High School U.I.L. Coordinators are Guillermo Moreno and Cassandra Thompson.
