United High School Senior Obtains Gates Scholarship

(Laredo, Texas)-Congratulations to United High School (UHS), senior Rommel Nuñez , who was recently selected for a 2019 Gates Millenium Scholarhip. Rommel is one of 1000 students across the nation who received the scholarship – which can be used to pursue a degree in any undergraduate major and selected graduate programs at any accredited college or university. Students are selected based on their notable academic achievements, leadership skills and record of community service.
Rommel maintains a GPA of 4.87, and is an active member of the National Honor Society and the U.H.S. Robotics Club. He is also student President of the United High School Engineering Magnet, and performs with the UHS Mariachi Del Mar. Rommell also attained his First In State title for alto saxophone in 2017.
Rommel’s history of community service includes donating time to coordinatesaxophone ensemble performances for local nursing home residents and serving his faith community at El Tabernaculo church. His ambition is to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering at Columbia University in New York.
“I want to thank the my parents, teachers, Magnet instructors and my counselor Joanna Garcia. They have been instrumental in my success, and have allowed me to diversify myself in many ways. My goal has always been to evolve academically and personally, and the opportunity to earn a Gates Scholarship has been a strong motivator. I’ve been working hard for this and it has paid off”, said Rommell, who is the son of Omar and Lydia Nuñez.
The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS), Program is an academic scholarshipprogram for higher education, available to high-achieving ethnic minority students in the United States.
It was established in 1999 and is funded by Microsoft founder Bill Gates through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation with the goal of developing Leaders for America’s Future.
Each year, the GMS program enables many students to attend and graduate from 800 of the most selective private and public schools in the country, including Ivy League colleges, flagship state universities, and minority-serving institutions.
