(Laredo, Tx)- The Nixon High School girl’s softball team made a generous donation to the American Cancer Society.  The team presented a $1,000 check to representatives of the American Cancer Society at the schools gym on Tuesday morning.

As part of their third annual “Strike Out Cancer” softball game held April 12, the Lady Mustangs donated all proceeds from their game against Corpus Christi Ray to the American Cancer Society.  The players, along with their parents, worked the ticket booth, concession stand, and t-shirt stand to collect the money.

IMG_0019“Once again, our girls stepped up to the plate for such a great cause.   This is our third year helping the American Cancer,” said Nixon High School Softball Coach Alex Colin. “We encourage our players to make a difference by giving back to our community. The girls enjoyed it so much they are already preparing for next year’s game.”

With the money that was raised the American Cancer Society is able to provide, wigs, caps, bras, prosthesis, hats, turbans, fuel cards, lodging, counseling, and other programs and services.

According to Stephanie Gonzalez, American Cancer Society Community Manager, many times even just a wig can make a cancer patient get the motivation to get out of bed and go to treatment. The girls make a big difference in a cancer patient’s life. It gives those patients hope and a positive outlook on their future.

“Thank you to the Nixon girls softball team for their tremendous efforts every year with helping the American Cancer Society raise money for services for the cancer patients in our community,” said Gonzalez.  “The girls volunteer every year and raise money for the American Cancer Society and I encourage all of them to keep volunteering and giving back to the community whether it be the American Cancer Society or any other organization.”
