(Laredo, TX )  St. Peter’s Memorial School 3rd grade student Ayde Rivera was a winner in the annual Flag Day Poster Contest hosted by Catholic Life Insurance.  As part of her award, she attended the Flag Day Celebration in San Antonio last week, where she was recognized, along with the other winners, by none other than Catholic Life Insurance President/CEO J. Michael Belz.

“I was nervous, but excited to be at the ceremony,” said Rivera, who placed 4th place in the Division B category of the contest.  “When I realized it was going to be the president who was going to give us our awards, I was very proud to represent my school of St. Peter’s.”

The theme for this year’s poster contest was: “American Heroes.” Participants were asked to honor the hero in their lives – i.e. a family member, teacher, or role model – by depicting them in their poster. All posters were required to include an image of the American Flag. Students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade were invited to participate. Six winners were selected to receive cash prizes from each of the three divisions (Division A: K-1st grade, Division B: 2nd-3rd grade, Division C: 4th-5th grade).

Rivera’s entry included an American blue cloth background, dotted with silver and red foil stars and trimmed in a red, white and blue ribbon. While the American flag dominated the top portion of the poster, it was the inset of the life-like soldier, complete with Army fatigues, combat boots, and a smiling face underneath a buzz-cut that captures the eye.

“I just wanted to honor the soldiers with my entry because I love them so much for what they are doing for our country,” said Rivera.

“This is such an honor for our school and for all of our students, who worked especially hard to create such masterpieces that not only incorporated the theme of the contest, but also demonstrate the values and incorporate the many lessons they receive here at St. Peter’s,” said Dr. Linda Marie Garcia Mitchell, principal of the historic 87-year old school.

St. Peter’s Memorial School is one of the oldest Catholic schools in Laredo.  First established in 1925, the school was run under the auspices of the Ursuline Sisters until 1968, and then the Salesian Sisters of St. John Bosco.  Now part of the Catholic Diocese of Laredo, the school offers classes from level K3 through 8th grade and typically serves approximately 150 students each year.
