The J.W. Nixon High School UIL One Act Play cast will be traveling to Edinburgh, Scotland, to participate in the 2012 American High School Theater Festival (AHSTF) Fringe. The group will perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the world’s largest performing arts festival, in Scotland this coming summer as part of the AHATF program.

The NHS Thespian Society is one of among 51 schools out of 2,300 schools in the entire nation that applied and was selected to participate and perform at one of the most famous theater festivals in the world.

“Seldom does a theatre company get to perform in the most famous theatre festival in the world. No other school in the history of Laredo can claim the same,” said Ricardo Perez Nixon High School drama student. “It would be an honor to show the world that Laredo has talent worthy of a world stage. This will also be a very educational trip for all involved. We need the support of the Laredo community, however, to help our dreams come true.”

Under the direction of Jose A. Flores III, the NHS UIL One Act Play has won five district championships in six years. “Mr. Flores demands much of all members of the cast in crew because he understands the importance of hard work in competition and life. He is often heard saying, “You never want to take students into competition with the intention to lose. You want them to have a fighting chance,” added Perez. “Mr. Flores also often preaches humility and good sportsmanship. In this way, Nixon has established a reputation of putting on a show that is unforgettable and achieving a level of respect that most teams do not display.”

The NHS UIL One Act Play cast has held various fundraisers throughout the year including a bowling tournament, “Elephant Man” performance, and hosting concession stands to help defray travel expenses to attend the Festival in Scotland. If you would like to assist NHS Thespians, please contact Mr. Flores, Theatre Arts Director at Nixon High at 795-3849.
