The event took place in coordination with The Webb County Community Coalition of SCAN at City Hall Chambers at 1110 Houston Street with Honorable Mayor Raul Salinas and Webb County Judge Danny Valdez at 10:00a.m yesterday.

June 26th is the International Day Against Drug Abuse. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987, this day serves as a reminder of the goals for society to be free of drugs. This year’s theme is “encourage young people to put their health first and not to take drugs.” This theme communicates that the destructive effects of illicit drugs concern everyone. The use of these drugs harms individuals, families, and society at large. The prevalence of drug use among young people is more than twice as high as that among the general population. At this age, peer pressure to experiment with illicit drugs can be strong and self-esteem is often low. In addition, those who take drugs tend to be either misinformed or insufficiently aware of the health risks involved.
