The LISD Child Nutrition Department is helping Laredo ISD students get ready for success by promoting the advantages of eating a healthy school breakfast every day. As part of National School Breakfast Week March 5-9, LISD will encourage students to “Go FOR GOLD!” with a healthy, nutritious, school breakfast. Students will learn about the healthy and academic benefits of starting their day with a balanced school breakfast. All LISD students are served free breakfast and lunch meals every school day.
On March 5th and 6th, the Laredo ISD Child Nutrition Program will recognize the top schools, Memorial Middle and Kawas Elementary. These schools had the highest increased number of breakfast participation from last year to this year. The recognition ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m.
LISD continues to follow federal nutrition standards for school breakfast that limit fat and portion size, and cafeterias are already working to meet new requirements for more whole grains, fruits and vegetables with breakfast. To reach more students with these healthy breakfasts, many LISD campuses have launched breakfast in the classroom programs, grab-n-go kiosks at the school doors, and breakfast-in-a-bag choices.
“Healthy school breakfasts can also be a lifesaver for busy parents,” Laredo ISD Child Nutrition Program Director Roberto Cuellar Jr. said. “It’s a race for any family to get their kids ready, fed and out the door in time for school. Knowing that your child can eat a healthy breakfast after they get to school can be a huge relief for parents.”
Laredo ISD is highlighting how eating a balanced breakfast at school can help students succeed, by hosting “School Breakfast – Go for Gold.” The school cafeterias will have posters displayed during the month of March. In addition to displaying posters, cafeterias will celebrate school breakfast with special menu names that go with the theme. Students will also have the opportunity to create their own school breakfast t-shirt design highlighting the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast. The top two designs from each elementary school will be sent to the Child Nutrition Center. The Child Nutrition Program will have judges rating and selecting the top three designs of all schools to be submitted to nationals.
“School Breakfast – Go for Gold” was created by the non-profit School Nutrition Association with support from General Mills Foodservice. This national campaign recognizes National School Breakfast Week, launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the availability of the School Breakfast Program (SBP) to all children and the links between eating a good breakfast, academic achievement and healthy lifestyles.
