City of Laredo Assists Active-Duty Soldiers With Tax Deferment

(Laredo, Tx)- The City of Laredo Tax Department hopes that active duty servicemen and women are aware of a provision in the State of Texas Tax Code that allows them to defer paying their current year property taxes, without receiving penalty or interest while on active duty. The serviceperson has no later than the 60th day after the date on which the earliest of the following occurs, before the taxes are due:
1.) The person is discharged from active military service;
2.) The person returns to the state for more than 10 days;
3.) The person returns to non-active duty status in the reserves; or
4.) The war or national emergency ends.
“This is an important exemption that the City of Laredo does honor for local persons who are actively serving in our armed forces and they may not even be aware that they can take advantage of this,” said District I Council Member Mike Garza. “It is important that individuals who may be actively serving in the military, meaning that they are deployed out of state, let us or the Webb County Appraisal District know of their situation,” he added.
There are specific timelines and rules regarding dates of notification for deferment, dates of deployment and the due dates for taxes; it is best for any property owning active military service member, or their family member, to contact the City of Laredo Tax Department at 791-7403 or at City Hall, 1110 Houston Street, with the appropriate forms to check eligibility.
