Domestic Dispute Turns Violent One Arrest Made

Courtesy Joe Baeza,

On Saturday, May 08, 2010 at11:53 pm, LPD received a call from the 800 block of Fasken Blvd, for a reported stabbing.  Officers at the scene found Zoraida Rangel (22) was staying at this apartment with relatives.  The suspect’s boyfriend, who is also father to her 3 month old child, arrived at the apartment and got into a heated argument with Rangel.  Rangel physically assaulted her boyfriend then grabs a kitchen knife threatening to hurt him and their 3 month old baby.  A relative, who was carrying the baby, a 10 year old child, and the boyfriend all, locked themselves in a room as Rangel aggressively tried to gain entry into the room by using a kitchen knife to force open the door.  Zoraida RangelRangel stabbed away at the door and her boyfriend received some cuts as a result when she eventually made entry.  The boyfriend managed to forcibly take the knife away from Rangel, but not before Rangel attempted to attack the 3 month old baby who was being carried by her relative.  The ten year old child placed herself as a shield between the enraged woman and the baby and received a laceration to her left ear as a result.

Rangel then goes to reach for yet another knife from the kitchen.  The occupants seize the opportunity and all leave the apartment with Rangel still inside.  The boyfriend leaves the apartment complex before police arrived.  He later calls PD from a different address to report the assault, but was somewhat uncooperative.  When Police arrived they met with the relatives in the parking lot.  Relatives managed to talk Rangel into releasing the second knife before Police arrived but not before Rangel stabbed herself in the stomach.  The 10 year old child and Rangel were transported to Doctor’s Hospital for treatment.  The 10 year old was treated for the injury to her left ear and released with non-life threatening injuries.  Rangel was treated by medical staff and evaluated psychologically by Mental Health/Mental Retardation personnel.  Rangel eventually was cleared both medically and psychologically by the MHMR personnel. Officers then placed Rangel under arrest.  Zoraida Rangel, 22 years old, was charged with two counts of Injury to a Child, one count of Aggravated Assault (Family Violence), booked, and remanded to Webb County Jail under no bind.  The baby was released to Rangel’s grandmother after Child Protective Services was contacted by Laredo Police.
