Once again, the Laredo Northwest Big League baseball team are kings of the diamond after having won the State Championship in Dallas this past weekend. After a grueling schedule, they emerged 3-0 from tournament play, to head to the regional tournament this week in Ruston, Louisiana. If they win this weekend, they get to travel to South Carolina for the World Series.
The team is made up of baseball players, ages 16-18, from Alexander and United High School, as well as one from Zapata, Texas.
“I’m so proud of these young men who are dedicated themselves to this sport and representing Laredo so proudly, both on and off the field,” said Mayor Salinas. “This is now Laredo’s team, and we should support them anyway we can.”
The team, lead by Coach Rick Ortiz, is soliciting donations from the community, local businesses and anyone who can help them to defray some of their travel, lodging and per diem expenses. The team leaves this Wednesday, July 15 and starts tournament play on Thursday. For more information on how to donate, contact Coach Ortiz at 763-3087.
