Courtesy Alex Meyer,

(Laredo, Texas)-Recently, United Independent School District (UISD), hosted the 2019 Special Olympics Young Athletes Program at the SAC. The 24 event program is designed for athletes age two to seven, and focuses on developing fundamental motor tracking and eye-hand coordination through physical play. Approximately 300 young athletes participated at this year’s competition. Student volunteers from United South High School and Gonzalez Middle School assisted the young Olympians.

Additional volunteers from our community came out to lend their support. Special thanks to our Precinct 1 constables and representatives from the Laredo Fire Department, Customs and Border Protection, Texas Department of Public Safety, UISD Police Department, UISD Transportation, Bibliotech and Chick-Fil-A. Superintendent Roberto J. Santos, district administrators and employees also gave of their time to support the young athletes.

For over 40 years, Special Olympics has been committed to the mission of providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. The annual program provides them with opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of skills and friendship with fellow athletes and their families.
