(Laredo, Tx)- Obtaining a college education is generally accepted as both a goal and a value among students today. By eighth grade, over 80% of students indicate that they will earn at least a college degree when asked and nearly half also expect to earn a graduate or professional degree.
To encourage higher education, Laredo ISD is organizing college tours for over 3,000 seventh and eighth grade students from Christen, Lamar, Cigarroa, and Memorial Middle Schools.
Students will be visiting both Laredo Community College and Texas A&M International University this month. Upon arrival at 9:00 a.m. the young visitors will be greeted by college personnel and student organizations. The campus tours will include visits to the careers facilities, classrooms, and student common areas. The tours will culminate with presentations by current college students who will share tips on how best to prepare for college and what will be expected of them as undergraduates.
The Schedule for students attending Laredo Community College will begin with Memorial Middle School on Wednesday, November 9. Cigarroa Middle will follow on Monday, November 14, Christen Middle on Tuesday, November 15, and Lamar Middle on Wednesday, November 16.
The schedule for students attending TAMIU will be Christen Middle on Tuesday, November 1, Cigarroa Middle on Wednesday, November 2, Memorial Thursday, November 3, and Lamar Middle on Friday, November 4.
The Director of the Guidance and Counseling Department, Rosina Silva, said that “These campuses tours are important for our students so that we can assist them in recognizing the connection between middle school, high school and of course post secondary education. We want for all our students to express a commitment to continue their education, and perceive all that they have learned as a way to gaining the knowledge and necessary skills to obtain employment upon graduating from a four year university.”
