(McAllen, Texas)-McAllen Public Library (MPL) is excited to announce its selection as a recipient of the Public Library Association (PLA) Digital Literacy Workshop Incentive, supported by AT&T. This $10,000 grant will fund free, five-week digital literacy courses offered in both English and Spanish, with American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation available upon request. The workshops, Connect with Tech / Conéctate con la Tecnología, will be held at Main Library, 4001 N. 23rd St. and Palm View Branch Library, 3401 Jordan Ave., starting the first week of February 2025.
This initiative, part of AT&T’s Connected Learning program, empowers libraries to provide crucial digital literacy resources, ensuring equitable access to technology and internet skills. MPL’s digital resources, including course materials, will allow patrons to practice at home or during their visit to any library branch.
“At McAllen Public Library, we believe digital literacy is essential for personal and professional growth,” said Claudia Villarreal-Quiroz, Reference Supervisor at MPL. “This grant will allow us to make a difference in the lives of our community members by equipping them with the skills they need to confidently engage with digital technology.”
The Connect with Tech / Conéctate con la Tecnología program will cover essential topics such as computer and internet basics, cybersecurity, email use, and videoconferencing. Workshops will run through May 10, 2025, at both locations. This program is one of 50 nationwide supported by PLA and AT&T’s Connected Learning initiative, which highlights the importance of libraries as hubs for digital equity.
