(Laredo, Texas)- The City of Laredo Parks and Recreation A Division League has started and The Laredo Suga Show Basketball Team started its season on the right track winnings its season opener against a tough offensive opponent the Dream Chasers. The game was close from the outset as neither team would give in to the other. Suga showed its defense stance early within the first minute of the game with 2 blocked shots from its newly acquired center Cristian Romo who has the capability to play just about any position on the court.
Romo meshed well with his fellow big men Jonathan Bravo and Evelio Rodriguez who combined brought in 30 rebounds both offensively and defensively including 3 blocked shots between Romo and Bravo.
Suga also featured a newly acquired veteran player in Gabriel Arrocha who provided much needed screening capabilities while enhancing Suga’s passing game which needed much improvement from its previous five seasons. Arrocha brings to the team a tough defense and a great on court offensive mentality that will leave opponents confused as to who to guard with the array of weapons now available to Suga.
Anthony Merino continues his mastery offensive ball distribution as well as his capabilities to penetrate the middle area of the court putting up 16 points with the newly acquired offensive weapons teams are now forced to play man to man against him in contrast to double teaming him and shooting guard Josue Casarez who also finished with 16 points.
Both Merino and Casarez are now able to have a more accurate shot selection using their speed and agility to move up the court.
Jonathan Bravo who was sorely missed by Suga Show during last season’s championship game against Team Howland picked up where he left off on his scoring production scoring 25 for Suga. Team Howland who won the winter league championship over Suga last season is once again a heavy favorite to win it all this season.
Bravo was also a key factor on the defensive end of the game hauling in 14 rebounds combined offensively and defensively.
Cristian Romo finishes his debut in the A division with 10 points and 11 rebounds with 2 blocked shots.
Jesus Cisneros returns to the court for Suga Show as he brings back his fiery defensive play stepping into the game to help give his teammates a much needed breather as Dream Chasers had Suga hustling throughout the game.
Evelio Rodriguez puts in a total of 14 minutes of play the most of his young playing career with Suga putting up four points on the board while providing Suga with a tough physical presence under the rims.
Coach Martinez of Suga Show was uncharacteristically calm during the game as he was pleased with the team’s opening day performance.
Suga plays its second game of the season next Tuesday against new one of the newest A division teams Part Time.
