City Council Celebrated Outstanding Achievements of Local Individuals

LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo Mayor, Dr. Victor Treviño, and members of the City Council presented various certificates of recognition on Monday, May 15, 2023, to individuals that have represented Laredo in several fields and have succeeded in competitions, while being an example of integrity, discipline, and commitment. The City of Laredo is pleased to continue presenting these recognitions in honor of the achievements of locals who represent this town through their professional careers or extracurricular activities. Monday’s recipients were as follows:

Cesar Gonzalez

Mr. Cesar Gonzalez was recognized for his contributions and inspiration to Laredo youth and their achievements in several Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championships worldwide; he is currently ranked #1 in Asia. Mr. Gonzalez is a United High School graduate, currently on active duty in the U.S. Air Force since March 2019, and committed to his training in this discipline, which he started in 2015. This weekend, Cesar is planning to participate in the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) in Houston, Texas, and in July, at the Sport Jiu-Jitsu International Federation (SJJIF) World Championship in Allen, Texas. The Laredo City Council wished him the best in his future competitions and professional endeavors.

Evelyn Padilla

Ms. Evelyn Padilla is a United High School Senior athlete that has excelled in Track & Field. Her specialty is the triple jump. Ms. Padilla broke a record at the UISD level and, afterward, at the District level, she is the 2023 District Champion. This record had been held since the year 2000. Evelyn took the opportunity to thank her family and her coach for their support in order to meet her goals.

Eduardo “Ticher” Ibarra

Mayor and Council recognized Mr. Eduardo “Ticher” Ibarra for qualifying for the 2023 Ironman World Championship in Nice, France. The Ironman is a triathlon that includes a 2.4-mile open water swim, a 1120 mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run. Mr. Ibarra’s athletic career also sent him to run the Boston Marathon, this past April and has qualified for next year’s marathon. His discipline and preparation will allow him to achieve his goals at an international level and the City of Laredo is proud of Mr. Ibarra’s performance.

United South High School Silver Steppers

The members of the United South Silver Steppers were recognized by Mayor Dr. Trevino and Council for their performance at the MA Nationals Competition in Arlington, Texas. The Silver Steppers won the National Championship in the Elite High School Division. This group of dancers was also awarded the following: Team Dances (1st place POM, 1st place Lyrical, 1st place Military, and 1st place Open) and Team Officers (1st place Hip-Hop, 2nd place Prop, and 2nd place Open). All these recognitions were achieved thanks to their teamwork and tireless efforts and the City will continue to support and encourage them throughout their path.

H. B. Zachry Elementary Basketball Team

The H. B. Zachry Elementary 4th Grade Girls’ Basketball Team was awarded a recognition certificate for their accomplishments in the past 4 years. The team has played together since the 1st grade and they have won championships every year. Currently, they are the “South Side Gems” and will represent Laredo at Nationals in San Antonio, Texas, this summer. The City of Laredo and Council wish this team of young athletes the best of luck in this upcoming competition.

Amanda Tienda

The City of Laredo extended special recognition to Mrs. Amanda K. Tienda for receiving the Laverne Hogan Award from the Texas Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association on April 5, 2023, in Galveston, Texas, during the Texas Public Safety Conference. Mrs. Tienda is the 9-1-1 Regional Manager and has been working for the City of Laredo for 8 years. The Laverne Hogan Award is to honor an individual who has shown extraordinary leadership in advancing 9-1-1 in Texas and recognizes a person whose name is synonymous with Texas and 9-1-1; Laverne Hogan, the first TX-NENA President and founding Executive Director of the Greater Harris County 9-1-1 Emergency Network. This award recognizes a 9-1-1 Administrator who not only excels in his or her everyday job, but who has gone above and beyond to further the goals of the Texas Chapter of the National Emergency Number Association, a person who not only consistently meets, but exceeds the expectations of their peers.

Lic. Carmen Lilia Canturosas, Presidente Municipal de Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas

Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino presented the Key to the City to Lic. Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal, Mayor of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, during Monday’s City Council meeting. Mayor Dr. Trevino’s initiative to present this prestigious recognition to the Alcadesa Canturosas for her binational collaboration and leadership during the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. Her vision to work hand in hand with Laredo, Texas, helped to reach out to more citizens from Nuevo Laredo to receive the vaccine and promote a healthy future for the region. Alcaldesa Canturosas and Mayor Dr. Trevino confirmed their continued commitment to enforcing the binational collaboration and support to enhance the quality of life on both sides of the border.
