(Laredo, Texas)-Recently, Lyndon B. Johnson H.S. 9th graders attended an LBJ Jumpstart Program camp where they were given an early start in Biology. Students spent over thirty hours engaging in in-depth, hands-on laboratory investigations, giving them insight into Biomolecules, Cell Cycles, Impacts on the environment, DNA, and Photosynthesis.
Teachers kept students engaged with fun labs such as extracting strawberry DNA, Modeling Mitosis with Oreos, creating DNA molecules from Twizzlers, creating an ecosystem from a fish tank, competing for combustion explosions, and discovering nutritional content found in everyday foods. Students were offered the opportunity to join the Leading the Learning Jumpstart Program in the fall. Program camp facilitators included teachers Rosemary Cantu, Melissa Dapron, Agustin Elizondo, Adrianna Rangel, and Elizabeth Renteria.
