Laredo, Texas – Safety.com ranked Laredo, Texas as being in the top 10 safest cities in Texas. Laredo placed number 8 on the list and was the most southern location on the ranking. Safety.com narrowed down the safest cities in each state based on two primary categories: crime rates and financial safety. The study evaluated each city’s crime rate using several public safety factors including the number of violent, property, and hate crimes to help determine the safest areas to live. Additionally, the study evaluated the city’s financial safety using socioeconomic factors like household income, average rent, and health insurance. This study is the second listing naming Laredo as a safe and prosperous community. SmartAsset.com placed Laredo on their list of top 20 safest cities back in April of this year.
“Making the top ten listing of safest cities is proof that Laredo is a safe community. Our dedicated officers work tirelessly every day to make this city a safe and prosperous community and the proof is in the numbers. In 2020, our city experienced a 16% decrease in Part 1 Index Crimes and an 11% decrease in overall reported crime. Our commitment to the mission of protecting and serving coupled with combining forces with our local, state, and federal law enforcement collaborators to make this safety a reality,” says Chief of Police, Claudio Treviño, Jr.
In addition, Laredo was ranked as one of the safest cities among others due to financial and economic safety. The study used 2019 data to satisfy its financial security section. Factors that were taken into consideration included unemployment and poverty rates, cost of living, uninsured residents, and access to the internet. For example, the unemployment rate was at 3.7%, the lowest annual jobless rate in the metro area since 1990. According to the Census, the median household income was $56,084, which was a 17% increase from 2018. Also, the poverty rate has dropped by 10% from 2018 and is now at 19%. During prior years, the poverty rate stood at 29-30%.
Among other cities, Laredo and Tyler were the only stand-alone cities that were ranked in the top 17. Others included suburbs like Plano, Pasadena, and Frisco.
