(Laredo, Texas)-UIL 2019 Theatrical Design State Qualifiers from Alexander High School (A.H.S.), and United High School (U.H.S.), recently advanced to the State Theatrical Design Contest. This year’s design prompt was based on “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl. The purpose of the Theatrical Design Contest is to foster appreciation of good theatrical design, to increase the number of schools which have adapted technical theater as an academic subject in school curriculum, to learn to lose or win graciously, accepting with good sportsmanship the decision and critique with a view to improve future projects and to satisfy the competitive, artistic spirit with friendly rivalry among schools.
Theatrical Design also provides students with an opportunity to develop their skills in design and in marketing. It also teaches the students critical and creative thinking, analysis, and artistic skills, which are used to communicate an idea or concept.
Theatrical design offers contests in Set Design, Costume Design, Marketing, Makeup and Group Design. Designs were submitted to UIL as directed, and the entries were adjudicated and rated before advancing schools were announced. Qualifiers at state are ranked first through sixth.
