(Laredo, Texas)-The Office of the District Attorney reports a guilty verdict for Enrique “El Red” Garcia, 51, who was charged with possession of a controlled substance.

On May 10, 2017, Laredo Police officers arrived to the 1900 block of San Jorge to question Enrique Garcia about an ongoing investigation he was involved in where he was asked to accompany the officers to the station. Following protocol, Garcia was advised he needed to be patted down before he was allowed to enter the police unit. As Garcia began emptying his pockets, a black substance wrapped in plastic fell by his feet. The officers logged in the evidence into property believed to be heroin. Garcia was transported to the Laredo Police Department where he was interviewed regarding the ongoing investigation and subsequently arrested for possession of the heroin.

The trial, which took place before the 406th District Court Judge O.J. Hale Jr., was heard by a jury over the course of two and a half days, rendering their guilty verdict after a short deliberation. The jury assessed a punishment of two years to serve, the maximum punishment, with a $10,000 fine.

Assistant District Attorneys Paul Thomson, Steeves Hopson and David Reuthinger prosecuted the case for the State.
