(McAllen, Texas)-McAllen residents whose homes were flooded due to last week’s rain event can cross at least one thing off of their recovery and repair TO DO list. The City of McAllen is waiving permit requirements for repairs due to flooding only, allowing residents to be able to get started on the repair process that much quicker.
“We know that the flood caused damages to homes and homeowners want to get started quickly on getting their homes and lives back to normal,” said McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez, P.E. “By waiving the permit requirements for repairs caused by the flood waters, this will be one less stress and time delay that they will have to deal with.”
Homeowners are encouraged to use licensed and specialized contractors for their repair work that includes projects, such as removing dry wall, replacing wires, and removing mold and other water damage. Photograph and document all damages and repair work for future claims and/or assessments.
The American Red Cross encourages people whose homes have been affected to assume that anything touched by floodwaters is contaminated and to make sure that everything floodwaters has touched be disinfected. Air drying is best so use open windows and doors and fans to help draw air into water soaked homes. Sort contents by items that you want to save; items to be discarded; and garbage. While some items, such as mattresses, pillows, foam rubber, large carpets, carpet padding, upholstered couches and chairs, books and paper products usually need to be thrown out, other items, such as food, cosmetics, medical supplies, stuffed animals and baby toys should always be thrown out.
