(Laredo, Texas)-United ISD staff held a press conference to kick off the start of National School Breakfast Week 2018. National School Breakfast Week is celebrated each March and is sponsored by The Texas Department of Agriculture. The goal of hosting this event is to promote healthy eating habits among our youth and to emphasize the importance of beginning each day with a healthy meal. To engage students and encourage them to participate in accountable talks about the topic the Texas Department of Agriculture has a selected a theme kids can identify with; “Dive Into a Healthy Breakfast.
The program includes an art contest sponsored where students can create their depiction of their meaning of the selected theme through art. Of the many statewide submissions made, we are proud to announce that a student from United ISD was selected as the overall grand winner.
Amy Hinojosa, a Fourth Grader at DeLlano Elementary, was selected as the 2018 National School Breakfast Week Art Contest Winner. Odalys Covarruvias a student at John B. Alexander High School also gained recognition for her rendition of the theme and was awarded Second Place in the High School Category for her rendition of Dive Into Healthy Eating.
“We are very proud of the exceptional work both Amy and Odalys have done,” said Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. “The artwork they created merits the recognition they received,” he added.
This year, elementary students throughout the district will have the opportunity to participate in themed dress up activities that educators can correlate to the overall theme. District middle school and high school students can expect to see different activities showcased in cafeterias throughout the district.
At the press conference students were showcased wearing the suggested themed dress up activities and given the opportunity to play with some of the items that will be featured in cafeterias throughout the district.
