United ISD Cherish Center Commemorates Annual World Down Syndrome Day

(Laredo, Texas)-The United ISD Special Education Department held a special program to coincide with Annual World Down Syndrome Day, which is nationally observed on March 21st.  The District’s Cherish Center hosted the program and welcomed special guests from The Down Syndrome Association of Laredo, J. B. Alexander High 9th Grade Unified Champion Club, Meet in the Middle Class of 2021, and United ISD Administrators. The Honorable Judge Tano Tijerina, together with City Mayor Pete Saenz jointly proclaimed the District’s recognition of Annual World Down Syndrome Day.

The program included a beautiful rendition of “This is Me” from the Greatest American Showman soundtrack, which was performed by Cherish Center students Ashley Arriaga, Rafael Gonzalez, Peter Romero and Celeste Y. Lozano from J. B. Alexander’s High 9th grade campus.

“This is a special time where we can share with the world what it means to have Down Syndrome and celebrate and focus on the abilities of individuals afflicted with Down Syndrome, ” said Cynthia Ramirez, Executive Director of United ISD Special Education. For the grand finale, students, teachers, administrators, and guest released blue and yellow balloons that carried  positive messages provided by the J. B. Alexander 9th grade Unified Champion Club and the Meet in the Middle Class of 2021.
