(Laredo, Texas)-Maria Teresa Garza, Librarian at Salinas Elementary, hosted Fifth Grade students from Mrs. Gonzalez’s class for an activity called “Hour of Code” in which students participated in global coding activities with students across the world.

Students learned various methods on how to write codes using familiar themes like Minecraft, Make it Flappy, Frozen, Angry Birds, and an old favorite Star Wars as a basis for their learning.

To date, over 134,000 events have been recorded in which millions of students have participated in activities where over 21,000,000,000 lines of code. That’s quite the amazing feat!

Hour of Code is meant to inspire students to delve into skills that foster higher order thinking skills, problem-solving skills, logic, and creativity using Computer Science as the basis for such learning.

This particular program is funded through donations. Some of the donors are Microsoft, Google, Facebook, and Bill Gates Foundation. According to the site responsible for hosting and facilitating the program, the goal is to predispose children of all cultures to Computer Science in an effort to inspire more students to explore a career in Computer Sciences.

Computer Science Education Week is typically celebrated in December. It is during this time that that educators across United ISD sponsor additional enrichment activities to emphasize the importance of Computer Science to student learning.
