The United ISD Special Education Department held a special program to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Amparo Gutierrez Elementary School hosted the celebration and welcomed special guests from The Laredo Down Syndrome Association and Laredo Down Moms. The Honorable Judge Tano Tijerina together with City Mayor Pete Saenz jointly proclaimed October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
The Gutierrez Elementary School choir performed the National Anthem; and FLS Student, Victoria Nunez, recited The Pledge of Allegiance. The encore of the program was a rendition of “We are all here together” performed by The FLS class and the third grade class.
“This is a special time where we can share with the world what it means to have Down syndrome and celebrate their abilities and not their disabilities,” said Cynthia Ramirez, Executive Director of United ISD Special Education. For the grand finale students, teacher, administrators, and guest stepped outside the school to released blue and yellow balloons to commemorate Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
