(Laredo, Tx)-“Read everything under the sun…prevent the summer slide!” That was the message United Independent School District administrators sent to students at a press conference held on June 10, 2014. Superintendent Roberto J. Santos, Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Guadalupe Gorordo and Lead Librarian Carmen Escamilla encouraged all students to read a good book over the summer.
“Students can read a book anywhere!” emphasized Superintendent Roberto J. Santos at a press conference. “The main idea is for students to keep their mind active over the summer and picking up a book is a good way to do it!”
The District also unveiled at the press conference two Public Service Announcements in English and Spanish. These featured UISD Board President Javier Montemayor, Jr. and encouraged students to read. The PSA’s were produced by the District’s Instructional Television Department and can be found on the District’s website at www.uisd.net, and clicking on the Summer Reading icon.
“You not only have to read a book, but you also have to understand it,” said a second grade student during the press conference.
“Reading makes you smart,” said another student.
Carmen Escamilla, UISD’s Lead Librarian, went on to explain additional information on the Summer Reading Initiative that can be found on the UISD webpage. Students and parents can download suggested book titles from the website and look at the various free electronic resources available from the District and the City of Laredo Public Library.
Reading enriches the mind and helps students build strengths in other content areas said Associate Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Guadalupe Gorordo, who went on to explain the importance of reading and comprehension for students of all ages. “You (students) can go to the library, or read a book on a phone, computer, or any electronic device.”
Newman Elementary School student Jacob E. Gonzalez ended the press conference by reading a book called Pete the Cat and His Magic Sunglasses by Kimberly and James Dean from cover to cover. Jacob will be a first grader in August and recently won a trophy at his school for reading the most books for the Accelerated Reader Program.
