Courtsy Veronica Cantu,
In an effort to understand dyslexia and other related disorders, the United Independent School District will host their annual Dyslexia Awareness Parent Festival from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on September 20, 2013, at the Bill Johnson Student Activity Complex, Rooms 1&2, located at 5208 Santa Claudia Lane. The event is free and open to all UISD parents.
The event will include informational sessions on the following:
o the characteristics of dyslexia and related disorders;
o assessment and diagnosis of dyslexia in UISD;
o effective strategies to support students with dyslexia at home; and
o information on UISD’s Scottish Rite Reading Program.
“This event will be very helpful to parents who want to learn how they can help their child or may want to learn more about Dyslexia,” said UISD Superintendent Roberto J. Santos. “Representatives from our Curriculum and Instruction Department will be on hand to provide information and answer any questions.”
The event will also provide a simulation that will allow participants to experience some of the challenges and frustrations faced by students with dyslexia.
“The simulations are lively, thought-provoking activities which help provide a better understanding of an individual with dyslexia,” said Brenda Benavides, UISD Dyslexia Coordinator, who also explained there will be a DVD documentary on dyslexia for parents to watch.
Additionally, representatives from various local organizations and educational institutions will be on hand. The first 50 participants will receive a UISD bag with Texas Scottish Rite Hospital items.
