(Laredo, Tx)-The United Independent School District Child Nutrition Program held a “Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program” at Prada Elementary School. The event featured a Watermelon Eating Contest with School Principal Gilbert Castro and Assistant Principal Alberto Perez. However, it was Cecilia Quintero from the District’s Child Nutrition Department who won the coveted honor for the second year in a row. The event also included educational games and fresh fruit and vegetable food tasting booths for all 3rd and 4th grade students. Students even had a chance to taste dragon fruit which some really liked while others did not.
Additionally, the District honored H-E-B on their 85th anniversary which they are celebrating this year. UISD representatives and students presented Zulema Castro, H-E-B Administrative Assistant and other representatives with a plaque of appreciation for their support to students and employees.
The purpose of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is to: increase elementary school children’s consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, expose elementary school students to new fruits and vegetables, improve healthy eating habits, and help elementary schools create healthier school food environments.
Special thanks to all sponsor participants who helped make this year’s event a success. They included the following:
H-E-B, Labatt Food Service, R.C. Food Service & Produce, Westside Produce, Lakeside Pharmacy, Keep Laredo Beautiful, Area Health Education Center, Laredo Main Street Farmers Market, La India Packing Company, and No Te Castigues.
