City of Laredo Health Department Reminds the Public to Practice Safety when Swimming or Playing in Natural Bodies of Water

Laredo, TX—The City of Laredo Health Department (CLHD) wants to remind the public that swimming in natural bodies of water is not recommended. We encourage the public to exercise caution if they decide to swim in natural bodies of water.
Public and private pools are treated and monitored to assure safe recreational water use. Because natural surface water is not treated persons swim at their own risk and should take precautions not to ingest or aspirate surface water (rivers, creeks). For this reason Public Health does not recommend recreational water use in untreated bodies. In addition there are no safeguards to further protect persons. “We know people are venturing into our cities waterways to cool off this summer, so we want to advise them to be careful and exercise health and safety precautions,” said Dr. Hector F. Gonzalez, Director of Health for the City of Laredo.
Please follow these recommendations for recreational water use in particular in natural bodies of water:
· Choose recreational water use carefully in particular natural bodies of water.
· Don’t dive in natural bodies of water! Microorganisms can enter the body through the mouth, nose and ears when diving.
· Never swim with cuts and wounds
· Pay attention to signage and avoid swimming in waters that are under a swimming advisory
· Do not swim or play in stagnant water low water areas.
· Do not swim or play in natural waters immediately after a heavy rain, as there is runoff from the surrounding areas that may have washed into the water.
· Do not swim or play in waters near sewer pipes, discharge pipes, or storm drain outlets.
· Do not swim in water that is also frequented by livestock or other land animals.
· In lakes and rivers (natural bodies of water) hold your nose shut or use a nose clip
· Avoid digging in or stirring up sediment in shallow, warm freshwater areas.
· Shower with soap and water after swimming or playing in the water.
Water Safety for all recreational water activities
· Shower with soap before entering the water and after and wash your hands.
· Never swim alone, follow all rules of water safety, and follow any advisories that may not allow swimming.
· Always obey safety and life guard rules.
· Use appropriate swim wear.
· Do not swim if you are ill.
· Never change diapers in water
