USHS Chess Team Takes 7th Overall At National Competition

The United South High School “Mighty Panther” Chess Team recently garnered a 7th place overall award at the Super Nationals V Chess Meet Finals held in Nashville , Tennessee .  There were over 5,340 players with over 1,560 teams competing from all over the United States , as well as, Canada .  The USHS Chess Team was also the highest placing  Texas high school in any division.

 Student Noe Fernandez placed 10th individually, in his classification, where he competed against over 300 competitors and was only 1.5 points behind 1st place.  All other USHS chess team members placed within the top third of all their competitors.  This year is the first year that USHS Chess Team has competed at this level of competition.  The team includes, Noe Fernandez, Christian Valdez, Jesus Valencia, Pedro Salce, Juan Vazquez, Cristina Garcia, Kevin Gueta, and Luis Luna.  Congratulations to all USHS Chess Team members!  The team would like to thank David R. Canales, USHS principal, and all faculty, and staff members who supported them throughout the year.  The team sponsor is Ramiro Garza II who is also a math teacher at USHS.
