The Laredo Public Library’s two book clubs’ – the “Scene of the Crime” mystery book club and the “Gateway City Book Lovers” club – March meetings are just around the corner and they are inviting Laredoans to join them with the two titles selected for the upcoming meeting, set for Wednesday, March 20, 2013.
If you want to figure out “who dunnit?” then the “Scene of the Crime” club’s selection is for you. In fact, “Seven Days” by Deon Meyer will keep you gripped to the edge of your book.
A police officer is shot dead. The next day, one of his colleagues is as well. Then the South African police receive an email threatening an additional cop killed each day until a cold case is solved. Inspector Benny Griessel is charged with reopening the file on the murder of Hanneke Sloet, an ambitious lawyer stabbed to death in her luxury apartment. There’s no apparent motive and no leads, just a set of nude photographs and a burly ex-boyfriend with a rock-solid alibi. Then more policemen are shot and the pressure mounts. Can Bennie solve the case and stay sober?
Featuring the fantastic characters from Deon Meyer’s Thirteen Hours, which won the Barry Award for Best Thriller in 2011, “Seven Days” is another gripping adventure from a masterful writer at the top of his game.
For books with a more socially relevant theme, the “Gateway City Book Lovers” clubs tome of choice, is for you. One of the most revered novelists of our time—a brilliant chronicler of Native-American life—Louise Erdrich returns with “The Round House” this years’ National Book Award for fiction, transporting readers to the Ojibwe reservation in North Dakota. It is an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family. “The Round House” is written with undeniable urgency illuminating the harsh realities of contemporary life in a community where Ojibwe and white live uneasily together.
The book clubs meet at the Laredo Public Library, 1st Floor Conference Room, 1120 E. Calton Road. The “Scene of the Crime” Mystery Book Club meets from 6-7PM and immediately following, from 7-8 PM, the “Gateway City Book Lovers’ Book Club meets. There are no dues, no roll call, and no tests! Just Laredoans having fun reading and discussing a book.
