David Blumberg, an Art History teacher at the Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts, was recently selected by the College Board to be a presenter at the annual Advanced Placement National Conference this summer in San Francisco.
During the conference, Blumberg will share his insights in a session titled “Using a Thematic Approach in Teaching Art History.”
“I am excited with the opportunity to represent VMT and LISD,” said Blumberg. “This is the new trend that we are moving towards in teaching art history.”
Blumberg, who has been at VMT since it opened in 1993, is in his first year of teaching thematic art history to students at the VMT Magnet School. Blumberg collaborated with colleagues, preformed extensive research, and gathered input from other art history professionals to create an AP course at VMT for Art History. As part of the course, he uses digitally enhanced PowerPoint graphics to teach the thematic fundamentals of art history to his students.
“I really enjoy teaching the thematic approach to art history and the students are having a great time with the class,” said Blumberg. “They find that the artwork is discussed in other classes or a book they read and now they understand what is being discussed.”
According to Blumberg, the class allows the students to see the reasons of art rather than just remembering facts about art. They get to understand more when we use the concept of themes instead of the traditional western chronological order.
During his presentation, conference participants will view the research on thematic approach versus chronological approach in teaching Art History. After attending this session participants will understand a different approach to teaching Art History and review the evidence that supports this approach. The participants will gain knowledge of various themes that could be used and art work to include. The session participants will also see an overview of one section and will be provided with a set of CD’s with a year’s worth of PowerPoint presentations that can be modified to their own needs
