LPD Explorer Program Seeks New Recruits

The Laredo Police Department will soon begin its’ 2010 Explorer Academy. Interested persons may apply at the main police station located at 4712 Maher on Saturday, November 6, 2010 from 9 a.m. to noon. Must be 14-18 years old.
Chartered through Boy Scouts of America, Exploring is a work site based program that gives high school aged youth hands on career experience. Meetings are held every Sunday, usually for about 4 hours, at the main police station. Officers provide classroom and hands-on training in different areas of police work including;
Accident Investigation
Arrest, Search & Seizure
Bomb Threat Investigation
Building Search
Crime Prevention
Crime Scene Investigation
Domestic Violence
Felony Stops
First Aid
Hostage Negotiations
Traffic Stop
Upon completing the academy Explorers can put their skills to the test, in competitions around the state. Explorers take part in community service projects and assist the department in activities like; Blue Santa, the police haunted house, “Police Week” activities and during the physical agility test for police applicants.
This is a year around program for career minded young men and women. It is not a “Boot Camp” for troubled children.
Membership requirements include;
- Having parental permission,
- Must be 14-18 years old
- Being registered in school or having a high school diploma,
- Maintaining passing grades in all subjects,
- Completing an application,
- Passing a back ground check,
- Successfully completing an obstacle course and
- Being interviewed and approved by a board of adult leaders.
