Daniela Beckelhymer, a Lamar Middle School sixth grade student, participated in Education in Action’s Lone Star Leadership Academy program. Beckelhymer was among 56 students selected statewide for the program held in Dallas and Fort Worth during the week of March 15-19.

During the weeklong residential program, Beckelhymer joined a delegation of distinguished young leaders from across the state to develop leadership skills while learning about the state of Texas.

“I learned a lot about Texas,” said Beckelhymer. “We learned information that I didn’t know about before. This has been a great experience I will remember forever.”

According to her math teacher, Armandina Saldivar, Daniela is a natural leader. “She takes it upon herself to help other students. Her behavior is great,” expressed Saldivar. “She tries to help her peers with things that come easy to her, such as math.”

While in the Dallas/Fort Worth area the students experienced what they are learning in school through visits to historically, politically, scientifically, and environmentally significant sites. The program allowed the young leaders to visit the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the Fort Worth Stockyards National Historic District, the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza, and many other sites.

When asked of her fondest memories, Daniela replied “It was fun visiting all the different museums and making new friends. I really enjoyed my last day when we visited the

Ballpark in Arlington with all my new friends.”

Daniela, along with other outstanding Texas fifth, sixth, grade students from across the state, were selected for the Lone Star Leadership Academy based on their demonstrated academic success and leadership ability, an educator’s recommendation, and involvement in school and community activities.

Beckelhymer is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Beckelhymer and Ana G. Sanchez. Daniela’s extracurricular activities include Campus Crime Stoppers, Lion Leader, Student Council, orchestra, and choir.

The Lone Star Leadership Academy provides an exceptional opportunity for outstanding students to learn about the Spirit of Texas and what it truly means to be from the Lone Star State. Participants discuss what they learn, complete problem solving and decision-making simulations, exercise creativity, and practice presentation skills in leadership groups. In addition, participants meet other outstanding students from across the state of Texas and make new friends while adding to their resume of academic achievements, developing leadership skills, and bringing home a wealth of information to supplement what they are learning in school.

Education in Action is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young Texans to become informed and active leaders in their communities. Outstanding 5th-8th grade student leaders from across the state are invited to participate in Dallas/Fort Worth, Austin and Houston/Galveston Lone Star Leadership Academy programs. Students involved in student government and service organizations are especially good candidates for Lone Star Leadership Academy programs. Facilitator/student ratio is one to 10 and all facilitators are Texas teachers.
