The Early College High School is proud to announce two students that have been selected by the College Board as 2009-2010 National Hispanic Recognition Scholars.  The scholars are Alexandra Reyes and Cristina Sanchez.

Early College High School Principal Jose Cerda, along with the faculty, staff, and administration congratulate these two young students.  “To have two students from one campus is a big honor and accomplishment,” stated Cerda.  “Both young ladies are role models for the other students on campus.”

Reyes is the daughter of Jesus and Elizabeth Reyes. Alexandra plans to pursue a degree in Biology at Rice University.  Reyes’s academic achievement includes the honor roll, 3.9 GPA, ranked 2nd in her class, and the Undergraduate Excellence Award.  Alexandra’s extra-curricular activities include Student Council and Prom Committee.  She attended Lamar Middle School and Prada Elementary School.

Sanchez is the daughter of Rosa and Daniel Sanchez. Cristina is interested in pursuing a degree in Psychology from Brown University.  Her academic achievements include the honor roll and being ranked 19th in her class.  Cristina’s extra-curricular activities include volunteering at TAMIU Summer Camp, local nursing homes and Casa Misericordia.  Sanchez attended Lamar Middle School and Alma Pierce Elementary School.

Both Reyes and Sanchez expressed their excitement about the recognition.  “It’s a good honor,” says Sanchez.  “We are both very excited to be recognized.”

The NHRP was initiated in 1983 to identify outstanding Hispanic/Latino high school students.  This year, nearly 5,000 students were selected from a pool of over 200,000 students who took the 2007 PSAT/NMSQT Test and identified themselves as Hispanic/Latino.

To qualify for the program, a student must be at least one-quarter Hispanic and meet several requirements.  Qualification for recognition is based on a student’s critical reading, mathematics, and writing skills scores on the PSAT/NMSQT.  A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 is also required.  To be eligible, a student must also identify themselves as Hispanic/Latino on the PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet.
