High school juniors currently enrolled at Laredo Independent School District have a one-time opportunity to take a college admissions test at no cost to the student. With funding from the Texas Legislature, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has contracted with ACT and The College Board, which oversees the SAT testing program, to make free tests available this spring and early summer.
LISD high school juniors may register for either the May, 1 or June, 5 administration of the SAT and the state will pay the cost of their regular registration fee.
The registration period has already closed for the May SAT test. However, if a student has already registered for that exam offered in May or June and has already paid for it, the vendor will reimburse the registration fee. The deadline for the June, 5 SAT test is May, 5. The standard fee for the SAT is $45.
Officials with the SAT testing programs are contacting students, parents and counselors directly to provide information about how to access this program.
All LISD high schools have been utilizing their GoCenters for SAT registrations together with the assistance of 11th and 12th grade counselors. “We are encouraging all of our students to take advantage of this great opportunity,” said Sandra G. Rodriguez, LISD Advanced Placement Director. “The program not only saves our students’ money, but it also gives them the opportunity to keep track of their performance and helps them continue working on their weak areas that might require a specific SAT score in order to be accepted to the college or university of their choice.”
In addition to the state-funded admissions testing, LISD is collaborating with The College Board to offer the eighth grade ReadiStep test and the 10th grade Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). ReadiStep covers reading, mathematics and writing, while the PSAT/NMSQT measures reading, mathematics, and writing skills.
“This year the district will be taking advantage of this opportunity by testing all eight graders with ReadiStep, and all 11th graders with SAT,” added Rodriguez. “Next year we will be testing all our eight & 10th grade students with PSAT and 11th graders with SAT.”
