(Laredo, Tx)-Newman Elementary School recently held a pep rally to kick off their Accelerated Reading Program. It is a software program designed to compliment the classroom reading program. The Program provides additional information to students regarding their reading rates, amount of reading, and other variables related to reading. There are three steps to using the Accelerated Reader Program. First, students choose and read a fiction or non-fiction book.
The teacher monitors the reading which includes guided, paired, literature-based, and textbook reading. Students then take a quiz. Third, the teacher receives information that is intended to assist, motivate reading, monitor progress, and target instruction as reports are available through the software program. Students are able to gain points for each book that is successfully completed. Highly popular and successful amongst students, the Accelerated Reader Program encourages students to be enthusiastic readers.
