Cigarroa High School students garner state honors

Courtesy Maribel Valdez,

Two Cigarroa High School Automotive Technology students from Cigarroa High School are on the road to success with their mechanical talents.

Ricardo Fructoso and Manuel Guevara received first place and a superior rating, with their individual projects at the Texas Skills USA contest in Corpus Christi.  Fructoso’s winning project dealt with Starting System Components and Guevara’s project was on Charging System Components.  All projects are created using a real automotive engine that is taken apart by the students and later reassembled.  The assembly process is photographed and documented by each individual student.  Later, the student is judged based on how the project met its goal and whether the documentation meets the finished product.

The Texas Skills USA is a non-profit youth organization which facilitates Trade and Industry Education, enhances curriculum and involves all students.  Students develop essential skills such as communication and teamwork.  They also gain a competitive edge in the work force.  Teachers benefit as well by enhancing their occupational education programs, improve attitudes in the classroom and gain local business support and participation.

Skills USA is a national student organization that works directly with business and industry to maintain American productivity, quality and competitiveness.  There are more than 1000 Texas Skills USA chapters at public schools such as the ones currently being offered at LISD high school campuses through the Career and Technical Education Department.  Texas Skills USA serves hundreds of students and professionals who are enrolled in trade, technical, industrial and health occupation programs through CTE.

Joining Fructoso and Guevara at the Skills contest and representing both LISD and the City of Laredo were students Benito Saldana, Jose Flores, and Santiago Chavez who also received second place for their individual starter and alternator projects.  Accompanying the students was instructor Gilbert Trevino.

In addition, the students and their instructor through the Skills USA contest were provided an educational history tour of the USS Lexington Navy Carrier.
