LISD Elementary students probe scientific methods

Every science project begins with a question. Laredo I.S.D. elementary school students answered some serious questions and conducted research for the projects which were featured at this year’s district wide Science Fair. Close to 500 elementary students from all 20 elementary schools displayed a variety of projects.
Students received recognition in the following categories: earth science, life science, natural science, and physical science. Trophies were awarded to students who received first through fourth place ratings. The overall winner and Grand Champion of the Science Fair was Macdonell Elementary School with 80 points. Macdonell won this honor for the fifth year in a row.
Macdonell Elementary won the following categories; Earth and Natural Science district wide, 1st-5th grade divisions, and in the intermediate grades 4th-5th. Santo Nino Elementary won in the Physical Science category. Ryan Elementary brought home first place in Life Science category and overall in grades 1st- 3rd. Other category winners included: Pre-K Special Education – Ligarde Elementary, Pre-Kinder – Gallego Elementary, Kinder Special Education – Leyendecker Elementary, Kinder- J.C. Martin Elementary, and Special Education 1st – 5th grades – K. Tarver Elementary.
“The students did an outstanding job with their projects, once again. Each year I am amazed at the exceptional work our students are creating,” said Gene Ovalle, LISD Elementary Science Dean. “I appreciate all the Science Instructional Specialist and Science Fair Committee members for assisting in the coordination of this year’s science fair.”
The two day Science Fair included judging of the projects by professionals from the medical, educational, and law enforcement fields, and graduate students from TAMIU. The public was also invited to view the many outstanding projects from throughout the district.
Prior to the science fair, all elementary campuses held science camps in preparation for the district wide event.
The Science Fair for LISD’s middle and high schools is scheduled for February 22-24, and is now affiliated with the Society For Science and The People (the organization that oversees Intel ISEF – International Science and Engineering Fair). All 9th – 12th grade students will now be eligible and able to participate at both the state and international level of science and engineering competitions.
