(McAllen, Texas)-Starting tomorrow, the McAllen City Commission will hear from McAllen City Management on the proposed $652 million budget for the City of McAllen for the upcoming fiscal year, 2024-2025. Highlights of the budget for the City of McAllen include a multitude of infrastructure projects, totaling more than $253 million; investment for the expansion of the Anzalduas Port of Entry cargo facilities; recommendations for fire and police protection; sustaining the current municipal workforce; and construction of the Quinta Mazatlán Center for Urban Ecology.

The budget workshop is set for tomorrow, starting at 4:00 p.m. at Champion Lakes Golf Course, 2701 S. Ware Rd. Tomorrow’s workshop is the first of six budget workshops that will be held before the public hearings in September, when the public is invited to make comments on the final proposed budget.

The strength of the city’s economy, its position as the leading retail destination in South Texas and northern Mexico and the vision and fiscal responsibility of the McAllen City Commission means the City of McAllen will be able to continue to provide a high level of public safety; innovative programs and essential services; and quality of life for McAllen residents in the next fiscal year.

By ordinance, City of McAllen Administration must present a balanced budget to the McAllen City Commission that is based on revenue and expenses by the municipality. The organization must also keep 140 days of working capital in General Fund reserves, in case of emergency or other disaster; currently, the number of days of working capital for the City of McAllen is 232 days, well over the required amount.

The City of McAllen not only has a strong bond rating of AA+, based on its strong, conservative fiscal management, but has also been recognized for the past 36 years in a row by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) for its transparent budget presentation.

The remaining workshops will also be held at Champion Lakes Golf Course. The remaining schedule is: Tuesday, August 13; Wednesday, August 14; Tuesday, August 20; Wednesday, August 21; and Tuesday, August 27. The workshops are open to the public.
