Laredo, Texas – The City of Laredo, Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño, in conjunction with the local nonprofit organization Myke’s Purpose, have proclaimed the month of August as Overdose Awareness Month. The event took place on Thursday, August 1st, 2024, at 9:00 A.M. at the Laredo Fire Department Administration Building.
In partnership with Myke’s Purpose, SCAN, and Pillar Strong, the City aims to raise awareness about overdose, reduce the stigma associated with drug-related deaths, and promote accessible, high-quality mental health and substance abuse addiction care for adults and youth.
Community members are encouraged to wear purple or a ribbon in memory of family members or friends who have suffered due to drug overdose or to offer condolences to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The City will also host various events throughout the month and encourage businesses and residents to turn the city purple by placing purple bows, changing the lighting to purple, or other ways to support.
