Celebrating Accomplished Local Residents at City Council

LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor D. Treviño and Council recognized and celebrated various individuals during the City Council meeting held on Monday, August 21, 2023. These local talented people have set goals and accomplished them exceptionally while representing Laredo before other cities and organizations. The City of Laredo is pleased to continue presenting these recognitions in honor of the achievements of residents who represent this town through their professional careers and/or extracurricular activities. Monday’s recipients were as followed:
J.W. Nixon Swim Team
The City of Laredo recognized the J.W. Nixon swim team for their efforts to help keep our community safe around the water, providing Swim Tips & Water Safety Tips to the youth of Laredo. This team also assisted the Aquatics Division with their swim meets. During the 6 years that the Nixon Swim Team has been active, they have advanced every year to 6 relays and individual events like the Region Competition, obtaining numerous recognitions and distinguished places.
Maritza Gomez, Coach
During Monday’s recognitions, Ms. Maritza Gomez, Nixon’s Head Swim Team Coach was also acknowledged for being an advocate for Water Safety helping to keep the community safe. Ms. Gomez shared her own experience with the danger of being in the water without knowing how to properly survive when she was a second grader. She was rescued and received the proper medical care which saved her life. This experience gave her the strength to overcome the fear of water and became a City of Laredo lifeguard, swimming instructor, lifeguard instructor, and a High School and Collegiate swim coach.
Karin Nicole Mejia
Ms. Karina Nicole Mejia was recognized by Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino, for her participation in the USA Softball Team in Australia. Ms. Mejia is a United High School Senior Softball Captain played softball recently at the New South Wales International Challenge 2023 at Blacktown Softball Stadium in Sydney, Australia.
Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency Programs
District 6 Council Member Dr. Tyler King, together with Mayor Dr. Victor Trevino and members of Council, presented a special recognition to the Laredo Medical Center-Gateway Community Health Center Family Medicine and Internal Medicine Residency Programs. This acknowledgement was presented to highlight the ongoing contributions these groups offer to the community and the foundation they forge for the future of healthcare and physician workforces in Laredo.
The United Way of Laredo has served the community for over 75 years with the sole goal of raising and providing funds for local non-profit organizations. Since 1999, the City of Laredo employees have been partnering with United Way of Laredo in pledging financial support to the 22 agencies that make up the United Way family. For over 75 years, United Way’s focus has been on education, health, and financial stability which are the building blocks for a good quality of life for the citizens of Laredo. In 2022, the City of Laredo employees donated over $75,000. For the 2023-24 United Way Pacesetter Campaign, the City of Laredo and its employees are pledging at least $80,000. United Way of Laredo president, Lucy Hastings, and other members of the board, were present and reiterated the commitment to help the local agencies in collaboration with the City of Laredo.
