Special Recognitions Awarded During Monday’s City Council Meeting

LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño awarded several individuals during the City Council meeting held on Monday, June 5, 2023, to a group of individuals that have outshined and accomplished very important objectives, while representing Laredo before other cities and organizations. The City of Laredo is pleased to continue presenting these recognitions in honor of the achievements of locals who represent this town through their professional careers and/or extracurricular activities. Monday’s recipients were as followed:
Mary Help of Christians School 1st Grade Boys Basketball Team
An award was presented to the 1st grade boys basketball team of Mary Help of Christians Schools as they had an undefeated season in their 5A Division. Not only did they achieve that goal, but they were recognized for winning the City Championship game held back in December 2022. The members of the team are: Myles Sanchez, Christian Sanchez, Pablo Velazquez, Mateo Hinojosa, Rogelio Villarreal, Ciro Pablo Ochoa, and Marcelo Valdez. Great job boys!!
Mary Help of Christians School 3rd Grade Boys Basketball Team
Also awarded during last night’s City Council Recognitions were the 3rd grade Mighty Stallions boys basketball team of MHCS as they too held an undefeated season, winning 6 consecutive games. They were amongst one of the teams who played in the Championship game held on April 16, 2023. The members of the team are: Benny Mendoza, Brandon Ramirez, Rodrigo Montemayor, Gerardo Cardenas, Diego La Villa, Daniel Castaño, Fernando Garcia, and Patricio Perez. They were coached by Sonny Rodriguez (not pictured).
Mary Help of Christians School 4th Grade Boys Basketball Team
Last night our City Council Chambers was filled by Mighty Stallions boys basketball players. Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño proudly recognized the MHCS 4th grade boys basketball team for also having an undefeated season and winning the title of City Champs in their 4A Division back in April 16, 2023. The team consists of: Thomas Sanchez, Jose Luis Bello III, Adolfo Valdez, Carlos Velazquez, Emilio Saucedo, Patricio Moreno, Jesus Emiliano Rodriguez, and Emiliano Salinas. Way to make Laredo proud!!
Gates Scholarship Recipients
Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño recognized the following individuals for being selected as Gates Scholarship recipients. These student excel academically, and are amongst a pull of over 51,000 students nationwide who were selected to receive this scholarship, helping them pursue higher education as they enter the next step of their scholastic career. The recipients are: Juan Manuel Lara III, (Cigarroa High School), Alan Castro Ramirez, (United High School), Alexander Vazquez Gonzalez, (United High School), Mariana De Hoyos Canales, (St. Augustine High School), Luke Elliot McDaniel, United South High School, Jose Luis Casarez, (Lyndon B. Johnson High School), and others.
Lic. Miguel Angel Esperanza Serna
Another recipient awarded by Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño during last night’s recognitions was Lic. Miguel Angel Esparza Serna, Anchor and News Director of Noticias al Diá de Canal 17 Nuevo Laredo XEFE Television and Programming Director and Sales. He was recognized for his lifelong contributions and dedication to journalism, news, and radio broadcasting in “Los Dos Laredos”. Mr. Esparza Serna was honored to receive this recognition and says he enjoys what he does, and it has been his passion since he was younger.
Damaris Rivera, MPA, ENP
A special award was presented last night to Ms. Damaris Rivera, MPA, ENP, as she recently received the Emergency Number Professional (ENP) Certification. This is a certification offered by the National Emergency Number Association (NENA). Ms. Rivera is one of two in our four county Region to receive this elite and prestigious certification, and is now recognized as one of the leaders in the 9-1-1 profession.
Borchers Elementary School Lady All Stars
Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño & Council recognized the Borchers Elementary School Lady All Stars for having an undefeated season and being titled City Champions. This young group of girls had a phenomenal season and did an excellent job in the court representing their school. Their parents and coaches are extremely proud and can’t wait for the next season.
