Special Recognitions Awarded During Monday’s Laredo City Council Meeting

LAREDO, TX— The City of Laredo Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño presented several recognitions during the City Council meeting held on Monday, April 17, 2023, to a group of individuals that have outshined and accomplished very important objectives, while representing Laredo before other cities and organizations. The City of Laredo is pleased to continue presenting these recognitions in honor of the achievements of locals who represent this town through their professional careers or extracurricular activities. Monday’s recipients were as followed:
Ms. Janet Zapata, owner of 550 Pizzeria
Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño recognized local entrepreneur Janet Zapata for being crowned World Pizza Champion on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the International Pizza Expo & Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mr. Ruben Bazan III
An award was presented to Ruben Bazan III, for his work with Shriner’s Hospital for Children and feeding the less fortunate in Nuevo Laredo.
Dr. Grace Snyder
Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño presented an award to Dr. Grace Snyder, for her hard work and contributions to the medical community and for being the first female Chief of Staff at Laredo Medical Center (LMC). “I have a lot of joy and pride working with the young women from our community who are trying to join our forces” said Snyder.
Nourish Laredo
Nourish Laredo, a teen led organization that has been doing community service projects in Laredo since February 2020 were amongst the many that we recognized during Monday’s City Council Meeting. The organization started by 5 teenagers who range in age from 11-18 began volunteering at local food drives with their grandfather (David Morales) when Covid-19 first hit our community. Nourish Laredo has done an incredible job of connecting with their peers and coordinating their efforts with other nonprofit organizations to help not only the youth, but many throughout the community. This group of individuals also exceed high academic standards and are role models for others.
El Metro Transit
Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño recognized El Metro Transit for winning the Outstanding Urban Transit System Award from the Texas Transit Association. This award is given to public transportation systems that have designed and implemented programs that demonstrate innovative concepts or effective problem-solving techniques and have applied these successfully in the public transportation industry. Receiving the award during Monday’s meeting was Mr. Roberto Garza, Director of El Metro Transit.
Assistant City Manager, Riazul Mia
Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño recognized Assistant City Manager Riazul Mia for his 27 years of service to the City of Laredo and congratulating him on his retirement. “Ria” as better known to many will always be remembered for his hard work and dedication to the city and for always going above and beyond. He will truly be missed!
Laredo Educational Autistic Foundation
Mayor Dr. Victor Treviño & Mayor Pro-Tempore Vanessa Perez, proudly recognized Lisa Hinojosa & Daniela Sada Paz for their hard work and dedication to the Laredo Educational Autistic Foundation. Not only do they work hard during Autism Awareness Month, but they do so much for this foundation throughout the year to help local children.
